why an Unboxed Church
Remember when you were 10 years old and you started that after school club in your parents' basement? That's just what we did. well...Sort of...
It all began in Glenn's living room after he got off the phone with a friend from church... Glenn and his wife - Kathie each, frustrated by contemporary Christian popular culture and saddened that so many of their old friends apparently wanted nothing to do with the Jesus story–asked each other: "What if we started our own church, what would it look like?"
After asking people in the neighborhood what they missed from church - who is God, or even - tell me about the god you don't believe in... why have you left church (www.LettersFromLeavers.com ) and some personal introspection - and of course guidance from the Holy Spirit - Glenn and his wife agreed that their new church would have to be
- Christian and not religiously generic
- intellectually honest and rigorous
- beyond the bounds of popular free church forms of worship and open to "liturgical eclecticism" (drawing from the wide expanse of historic church traditions)
- evangelical in the broad sense of being grounded in the good news of God's grace and not the bad news of shame and religious manipulation
- a stimulus for social justice, consciousness-raising, and acts of mercy.
- a place for everyone - Christians and those who are not.
So - that is our beginning story - ... our new church is just beginning - come find your place in this emerging community
